Mentor: River Jukes-Hudson

Software: Adobe InDesign, Illustrator

Key words: Hong Kong, Pop-music, Cantonese music, 1980s

This editorial design project, titled "The Big Wave," explores the zenith of the Hong Kong music industry during the 1980s, a period often referred to as the "Age of Glory." The project showcases six iconic artists from that era: Leslie Cheung, Anita Mui, Alan Tam, Danny Chan, Teresa Teng, and the band Beyond. The title "The Big Wave" draws from the Chinese metaphor of ebb and flow, used to describe the dynamic state of affairs, symbolizing the peak period of the music industry during the 1980s.

The book features three bilingual articles that delve into the nuances of the Hong Kong pop music scene and its influential artists. Additionally, it includes a chapter from "Hong Kong Cantopop: A Concise History," accompanied by a timeline of images and captions detailing significant events of the era. The artist section provides comprehensive biographies, discographies, photos, and bilingual translations of selected songs, offering a rich, multifaceted view of each artist's contributions to the vibrant cultural tapestry of the time.
